He is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Mary. He was born on July 28, 1930 to Henderson H. Smith and Edna Elizabeth Reynolds Smith in Dallas County, Fordyce, Arkansas. A private family funeral service will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. A livestream of the funeral service will be availible at www.caldwellparrish.com on Hollie's tribute wall. Smitty graduated Princeton High School in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 where he served two years before joining the United States Navy. On June 26, 1952, Smitty married Mary Margaret Mulkern at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 22 years. After discharge from the United States Navy, he worked for the State of Iowa as Director of Job Services. Smitty was an active member of the Moingona Masonic Lodge #633 and The Naval Fleet Reserve Association Branch 271. Once retired in 1991, Smitty and Mary ventured south to Donna, Texas and spent many winters relaxing with friends. Surviving are son, Hollie (Cindy) Smith of Des Moines, daughter, Mary (Joe) Bertogli of Des Moines, son, Mike (Tina) Smith of Des Moines and daughter, Debi (Greg) Bordner of Lees Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Shannon (Jamie) Wheat, Megan Smith, MacKenzie (Pat) O'Hair, Matt Smith, Mitchell (Kaela) Smith, Courtney Bertogli, Spencer Smith and Jake Peters; great grandchildren, Jaxson Wheat, Liam O'Hair, Trenton Wheat, Burke Smith, Everly O'Hair, Vinny Smith, and Irelynn O'Hair. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Henderson and Edna Smith; his wife, Mary, brothers, Henderson H. Smith Jr. and William A. Smith, sisters, Irene Kellogg, Loretta Epps, Roberta Evans, and Vera Ferris. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the great staff at Bickford Cottages in Urbandale.
