Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements for Howard Gene Dorman, 88, of Perry. Gene died June 5, 2022 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2022 at Hastings Funeral Home with family present from 5:00 - 7:00p.m. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church in Perry. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery outside of Perry. The family has requested that friends and other family members use Harper Rose Flower Shop in Perry if wanting to send flowers. Howard Gene Dorman, son of Grant and Irene Dorman, was born on December 26,1933 in rural Boone County, Iowa. Gene attended Perry schools and graduated from Perry High School in 1953. He was a lifelong resident of Perry. Gene was drafted into the United States Army in 1955, and after serving two years he returned home to Perry. Gene met and fell in love with Charlene Roberts of Rippey, Iowa and the two were married June 9, 1957. They were blessed with three boys: Michael, Randy, and Jeff. He worked for Whiton Seed Company, Ben VanPelt Construction, and the gas company. After working for Anderson Erickson Dairy for 20 years, Gene worked for the Perry Schools as a custodian, retiring in 1995. He attended the First United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for a number of years. Gene enjoyed working on puzzles and working in his vegetable garden. He loved sharing the tomatoes he grew with all the neighbors. In the spring he loved hunting mushrooms and coaching his boys little league baseball teams. In the fall he always went hunting with his sons, relatives and friends. Opening day of pheasant hunting season was treated like a national holiday. A highlight for Gene every year was a weeklong fly-in fishing trip to Canada with his sons and friends. He was also a lifelong Cardinals and Packers fan. His granddaughters would tell you he gave the best hugs in the whole world. He was such a kind and good man. Gene died Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines Iowa at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents Grant and Irene, his brother Chuck, and brothers-in-law Marvin Menz and Philip Roberts. Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years Charlene; his sons: Michael Dorman (Kathy) of Shawnee, KS, Randy Dorman of Silver Spring, MD, and Jeff Dorman (Kate) of Independence, IA; seven grandchildren: Kevin Hager (Tim Meola) of NY, NY, Mike Hager (Brooke) of Lenexa, KS, Abby Kellogg of Nevada, IA, Jessica Smith (Phillip) of Shawnee, KS, Jake Hager (Jessica) of Shawnee, KS, Grace Dorman of Independence, IA, and Sophie Dorman of Phoenix, AZ; eight great-grandchildren: Lyla Covel, Presley Hager, Kennedy Hager, Harper Smith, Hudson Smith, Carson Hager, Faith Hager, and Bridget Hager; sister Rose Menz of Perry, IA; sisters-in law Carol Dorman of Texas, Toni Roberts of Perry, Claudette Fry of Santa Ana, CA, and Elaine Holz (John) of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or the Dallas County Conservation Board.
