Ivan Russell Winger

Ivan Winger, age 83 of Perry, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2021 at the Perry Lutheran Homes Eden Acres Campus in Perry, IA. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. Burial will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery at Perry, IA. Memorials will be given to Perry Public Library and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home & Cremation Care. Ivan Russell Winger was born on March 15, 1938 at Coin, IA to Paul A. and Alma (Vogel) Winger. He attended Roosevelt Elementary and Perry High School. Following graduation, he attended Mankato State, graduating with a bachelors degree. He served his country in the United States Air Force from May 31, 1956 to May 30, 1962. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Frances Johannessen at Duluth, MN on December 28, 1960. He taught American history at the University of Wisconsin Mankato State Branch and the University of Kansas before moving back to Perry, where he began farming. He was a member of the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church. He served the Perry Public Library board, Mount Olivet Lutheran Church board and played with the Friday Night Pickers Blue Grass Band. He enjoyed playing and listening to music, reading, woodworking, and drawing cartoons. For a number of years, he was the Sunday morning D.J. at KDLS radio. In death he rejoins his wife Lorraine, and parents Paul and Alma Winger. Left to cherish Ivans memory are his son, Eric (Melissa) Winger, Tigard, OR, grandchildren, Zachary, Tessa and Hayle Winger, and sister Martha Winger, Perry, IA.
