James "Lad" Bedenbender, 70, of Adel, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014. He will be greatly missed by wife, Linda; children, James Jr., Michelle, Tara (Mike), Kim, and Jenece; sister, Naomi Cordner; two nieces, many grandchildren, and all who knew him. James was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Beulah. A Memorial Service will be held 1:30 PM Monday May 5, 2014 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel, with burial following at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. He was born in Breckenridge, Missouri in 1943. He served 3 1/2 years in the Army National Guard. He worked as a rough neck oil driller in several states which culminated in a rig supervisor position. For 13 years he supervised canning operations at Mrs. Grimes in Grimes, Iowa, until the plant closed. From there he became grinding supervisor at Adel Brick and Tile from which he retired after 17 years. Not challenged by staying retired, he took a position at Adel DeSoto Minburn school where he enjoyed interacting with kids--especially those assigned to him as part of detention. James was very patriotic and enjoyed painting planets and space. He also enjoyed traveling, including trips to Japan and several vacations to Hawaii and Key West. He was the kind of man who gave the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it, and he loved to laugh. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of James. Online condolences may be left at this site. Service: 1:30 PM Monday May 5, 2014 McCalley Funeral Home Adel, Iowa
