Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Worthington United Methodist Church. Burial: Worthington Cemetery. Memorials: Worthington United Methodist Church and the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (5452 NE 22nd, Des Moines, IA 50313-2528). James R. Reinert was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 26, 1931; the son of George and Bessie (Admire) Reinert. He attended Washington Country School in Douglas Township, Madison County and graduated from Earlham High School in 1949. He married Beverly Soderberg on June 18, 1950 and to this union four children were born; a baby boy who died shortly after birth, Christine Anne, Elizabeth Linn and David Brian. Jim was a farmer most of his life. He was also a machinist for two years while living in Colorado before purchasing a farm and moving back to Iowa. He was a life-long member of the Worthington United Methodist Church as well as a member of the Adel Masonic Lodge #80 AF & AM, the Winterset Eastern Star Chapter #180, the Scottish Rite Consistory and the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He was also a member of the Hawkeye Knife Collectors, a life member of the NRA, and a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association. Jim had many passions in life. When younger, he participated in track and field winning first place in the discus at state and competing in the Drake Relays in the broad jump where he received second place. He had a soft heart for animals. He liked motorcycles and shared a love for guns with his father. He collected pocket knives and was skilled at repairing and restoring them. Jim also had in interest in electronics and radio, becoming an amateur radio operator. Jim died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines. He was 78. Jim is survived by his wife, Beverly of Earlham; two daughters, Chris Mapes (Doyle) of Earlham and Beth Padilla (Frank) of Henderson, CO; one son, David Reinert (Bonnie) of LaPorte, TX; seven grandchildren, Joel Mapes (Tanisha), Erin Padilla Meese (Jeff), Eric Padilla, Katie Padilla, Stephanie Padilla, Carole Mapes, and Lauren Mapes; two great grandchildren, Morgan and Londyn Mapes; and several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
