James was born July 5, 1931 to Acie and Lois Inskeep Guffey in Plano, Iowa. James attended school in Centerville, Iowa graduating with the class of 1950. He then enlisted in The United States Navy and served aboard the US Jupiter during the Korean War conflict. He then returned stateside and moved to Newton, Iowa where he worked as an electrician supervisor at the Maytag Company. He worked 43.2 years at Maytag retiring from the company in December of 1993. James is survived by his wife, Karen; son, William and wife Catherine of Zurich, Switzerland; daughters, Jennifer and husband Dan Ensz of Omaha and BG and husband Erik of Bethany, Missouri; grandchildren, Claire Guffey of Zurich; Jake and Parker of Omaha and Carci and Crae of Bethany; sisters, Mary and husband Freeman Purvis of Centerville, Iowa and June O Connell of Chicago; brother, Acie and wife Lois of Albuquerque New Mexico and several nieces, nephews, and other family members. James was preceded in death by his parents, father in 1971 and mother in 1976 and a brother Jerry in 1997. James enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening, traveling and mushroom hunting. There will be a Celebration of Life and storytelling starting at 10 A.M. Thursday at Capitol Hill Christian Church followed by a luncheon. Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home of Urbandale is in charge of arrangements with a graveside service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the James Guffey scholarship fund.
