Jan (Juanita) C. Kennedy, 73, of Winterset died Tuesday, October 15, 2013 after a brief cancer illness. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to services on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the ARL (Animal Rescue League of Iowa, 5452 NE 22nd St., Des Moines IA 50313) and Best Friends Animal Society (5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741). Jan (Juanita) C. Cygnar was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 27, 1940, the daughter of William and Julia (Czyka) Cygnar. She moved with her family to Burbank, California in 1952 where she graduated from John Burrows High School in 1958. Following graduation she worked as an operator for Pacific Telephone Company. She met Robert N. Kennedy (originally of Buffalo, New York) and they married on March 3, 1962. Jan and Robert made their home in Lakewood, California. Jan worked as a teacher’s aide at Willow Elementary School in Lakewood. She later returned to Pacific Telephone, retiring in 1993. She was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, was a Cub Scout den mother, and Campfire Girls assistant leader. She was also involved with the PTA at Willow Elementary School. During retirement Jan and Robert moved to Leeds, Utah and subsequently to Winterset to be near grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Robert N. Kennedy of Winterset; her children, Michael (Dawn) Kennedy of Adel, Iowa, Patrick (Michelle) Kennedy of Ladera Ranch, California, and Linda (Matt) Devine of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
