Janet Mcmichael

Janet Elizabeth McMichael passed away on February 15 at the age of 91.  Janet was born in Iowa City to Louis and Elizabeth Greer.  She attended St. Patrick elementary and high schools and graduated from the University of Iowa as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Janet first worked at the Iowa City Public Library before moving to Des Moines to work as librarian for The Bankers Life Company.  It was there that she met Jim and they were married in 1957.  They had five children:  John, Margaret, Patti, Mary, and Tom.

She was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of St. Theresa Church.

Janet and Jim enjoyed numerous overseas trips, including Italy, Turkey, Greece, Scotland, and Ireland, to name a few.  They also traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting nearly every state at least once.  Activities that Janet enjoyed included a neighborhood bridge club, membership in the St. Theresa Altar and Rosary Society, Girl Scout leader, librarian for St. Theresa School, and volunteer work at Mercy Hospital and Dowling Catholic High School.  Most of these she did with her good friend, Marilyn Sackett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her parents, and two brothers - Monsignor Edward Greer and Gerald Greer.  She is survived by her five children, John, of West Des Moines, Margaret, of Baton Rouge, LA, Patti, of Iowa Falls, Mary, of Kansas City, MO, and Tom, of Dallas, TX; sister-in-law Sheila McMichael; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at St. Theresa Church, 1230 Merle Hay Road, Friday, February 24, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral at 11:00 a.m.  Lunch will be served in the Parish Hall immediately following the funeral.  Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery after lunch.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for the care our mom received during her stay there.
