Janis Lee (Ryder) Winterhof was born March 3, 1947, in Oak Park, IL to Philip Thomas Ryder and Dorothy Patricia (Jones) Ryder. Janis’s family moved to central Iowa during her school years, and she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines with the class of 1965. Janis married Roger D Winterhof in 1969 and they had a son, Chad Winterhof, while living in several Iowa communities during Roger’s career. In these communities Janis volunteered at the local libraries. Janis filled her time with backyard gardening, reading and a whole variety of creative pastimes, most recently hand quilting. Janis passed November 26, 2017, at her home in Urbandale, IA, under Hospice care. She leaves behind her husband, Roger, of 48 years; son, Chad E Winterhof of Boise, ID; and brother, James P Ryder of Littleton, CO. Also, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Loren (Mary) Winterhof, Delbert (Cheryl) Winterhof, Gaylene (L Wayne) Harms, Sondra (David) Mercier. Also, nieces and nephew, Wendy Lathrop, Katherine Ryder, Melanie Winterhof, Ryan Harms, Rachel Fanning, Halli Rieman, and Rhianna Mercier-Houso. Preceding Janis in death were her parents and sister-in-law Kwai-Hing Ryder. Janis’s remains were cremated and no formal arrangements are planned at this time. The family requests that any remembrances may be directed to The Brenton Arboretum, Dallas Center, IA or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Des Moines to support Janis’s long time interests in peaceful natural settings and companion animals.
