Jean Mary Semler, 90, passed away on January 9, 2021 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Jean was born on May 12, 1930 in Waterloo, Iowa to Richard and Mary Bowers. She married Richard W. Semler on August 17, 1951. Jean worked as a secretary and as a substitute teacher at an Amish school. Jean was an active member in the United Methodist Church in McAllen, TX, Cedar Falls, IA, and Independence, IA, where she was in the church bell choir. She held a state office for the United Methodist Women. She was active in PEO and was the president for two years. Jean enjoyed playing the piano, music, knitting, reading books, square dancing, cooking, baking, traveling, going on cruises and most of all loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Duane (Diane) Semler and Bonnie Bowers; grandchildren, Ross Ritter, Amanda Semler, Erin Bowers and Keith Semler; and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Betty Ann Sieglaff. A private family memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2021. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Heifer Project, St. Joseph Indian School or a hospice of your choice.
