Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 14, 2010 at Union Chapel Cemetery, South Township, Madison County, with military honors by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #8142 and American Legion Post #184 of Winterset. Jerald Nelson Read was born in Winterset, Iowa on June 5, 1932, the son of Nelson and Addie (Dale) Read. He grew up in Winterset and graduated from Winterset High School in 1950. Following high school, Jerald enlisted in the United States Air Force and later enlisted in the United States Army. He made a career out of his military service retiring after 40 years. During his enlistment, Jerald worked as a mechanic. Jerald was not one to join organizations but he did LOVE to bowl. And when he lived in Wyoming, he also enjoyed hunting. Jerald died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Afton Oaks in Houston. He was 77. He is survived by his son, Little Jerry of Illinois; his daughter, Melany (Randy) Benge of Winterset; his son, Mike Read of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, Tyson Olson, Logan Johnson, Addy Benge, Alicia Read, Celeste Read ,Stevie Read and Summer Read; one great granddaughter, Makayla Nelson; four brothers, Don (Ann) Read of Harrisonville, MO; Clifford (Glynnis) Read of Tipton; Paul (Myrna) Read of Maryville, MO; Kenny (Melissa) Read of Des Moines and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Jerald was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Christopher and Steve Read. Memorials may be directed to the Evening Star Masonic Lodge #43 and the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts of Winterset.
