Jerry Alan Kutzner

March 4, 1947 — January 29, 2024

Jerry Alan Kutzner, 76, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away peacefully Monday, January 29, 2024 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, IA.

Jerry was born on March 4, 1947 to Elvin and Barbara (Hubler) Kutzner in Marshalltown. He attended high school in Marshalltown and graduated in 1965. While growing up he worked alongside his uncle Howard and learned many valuable trade skills including construction, carpentry, plumbing and electrical. On a trip to Alaska with his dad and brother he met a German cabinet maker and woodworker who took him in and allowed Jerry to be his apprentice.  Jerry brought his new skills back to Marshalltown where he opened his own woodworking and cabinet making business: Kutzner Cabinets. For the next 45 years he and his wife Cynthia would run a very successful business. He was also in the Army Reserves at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

Jerry married the love of his life Cynthia Swartz on June 17, 1972.  They just recently were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner at Greenbriar in Johnston.

Jerry had a full life with his three children and eight grandchildren. He enjoyed being a father and grandfather and was always helping them with any and all home projects. Jerry created many custom furniture items for his family, friends, and his church. He was a master of fixing everything and there was no problem he couldn’t solve. When he wasn’t working he did enjoy traveling all over the United States. Although not a gambler, a favorite destination of his was Las Vegas where he loved to travel with his wife and often invited friends and family to come as well.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Kutzner, three children, Angela (Mike) Trachta, Jamie (Edina Sabic) Kutzner, Julie (Charles) Hill, eight grandchildren: Emma, Molly and Alice Trachta, Hart and Mallory Kutzner, Lillian, Hendrik, and Oliver Hill, one beloved brother, Gary (Pam) Kutzner of Marshalltown. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Barbara Kutzner.

Mail to Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory, 8201 Hickman Rd, Urbandale, IA 50322.

This memorial fund will be used to purchase new woodworking machines and equipment for the students who are in the Industrial Arts program at Marshalltown High School. Jerry, Cynthia, and his children all went to school there and value the importance of teaching future woodworkers and artisans. The school is currently renovating the department so this will be the perfect time to give back to the community and continue Jerry’s passion of woodworking.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, IA in their Chapel. Immediately following there will be a Celebration of Life for Jerry at BackPocket Pin & Pixel from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
