Jessie Sawhill

Jessie Sawhill was born January 27, 1912 at home in Taylor County, near Conway, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Kernen) Robey. She graduated in 1929 from Bedford High School and later completed nurse’s training from Methodist Hospital School of Nurses in 1934. Jessie went on to marry Harold Sawhill on June 12, 1934. Harold later died in 1964. She is survived by her children, John Sawhill (Karen) of Lorimor and Eyleen McKinley of Winterset; 7 grandchildren, Mark, Jim, Andrew, Rhonda, Jennifer, Beth and Billy; and 8 great grandchildren. Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Harold Sawhill, Lloyd Bond and George Radakovich; five siblings, Jennie, Edna, Clyde ‘Bud’, Louis and Jake; and daughter-in-law, Annette Sawhill. Jessie was a registered nurse prior to marriage. After marrying Harold, they started their farming career. She raised chickens, sold eggs and milked cows. She was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian Church and former member of the Pitzer Presbyterian Church. Jessie was also a member of the Golden Rule Club, Missionary Society, Madison County Cattleman’s Association and Master Corn Growers Association. She and Harold were the founding members of the Winterset Squares, square dancing. She loved cardinals, enjoyed getting together with friends and playing cards and was a wonderful cook. Most of all, Jessie cherished her family and enjoyed the time she spent with them. Jessie passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Winterset Care Center South, Winterset. She was 95. Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, where family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. January 22, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa. Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday January 23, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa. Memorial: Memorial contributions may be directed to the Church of the Nazarene and/or Middle River Hospice.
