He grew up on the family farm northwest of Adel, involved in the normal farm chores and 4-H. He graduated from Dexfield High in 1964, where he participated in football, basketball, and FFA. After high school he was drafted into the Army and served a tour of duty in Korea. When Jim completed his service in the Army, he returned home and worked a short time for Kirby Drilling Company, and then went into farming with his dad. On August 19, 1972, he was united in marriage to Beverly O'Harra. They had one daughter, Allison. Jim continued farming into the 80's and then moved into Adel to work for the United Brick and Tile, where he worked for 20 years. After his retirement, Jim mowed for the City of Waukee Parks Department, a job he enjoyed a great deal. Jim liked to fish and hunt, especially when he was younger. He played an occasional round of golf. At one time he owned a stock car (No. 64) that he raced at Stuart. He enjoyed the time he spent with his coffee and card playing friends. And he especially enjoyed the trips he and Bev made to Texas to Allison, Eric, Chance and Kylie. Jim was a quiet-spoken, kind-hearted person. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
