Joan Lila Smith

Joan, age 50, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Kavanagh on 56th Hospice House. Joan was born August 25, 1965 in Des Moines, IA to John and Janice (Klaus) Karl. She had a very full life with family and friends. Joan enjoyed music, dancing and cooking. She attended Des Moines Schools. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jan Marie Karl and daughter, Hope Karl. Survivors include her daughter Shelby Toye (husband Thomas),of Des Moines 4 sisters, Shelly Hance of Columbia, CA, Jeanine Karl, Jill Crowley and Joleen Karl all of Des Moines, 2 brothers, John Karl (wife Beth) of Greenfield , IA and Jim Karl (companion Nancy Shore) of Centerville, IA, husband Tom Smith of Des Moines, close companion Walter Smith of Des Moines and many nieces and nephews. There will be a Celebration of Life Open House on January 9, 2016 from 12-3pm at The Meadows Clubhouse, 2525 County Line Rd. Des Moines. Pastor Jim Buchanan will be giving a blessing at 12:30pm, with fellowship and memories to follow. Joan will be cremated with a family service at a later date. She is greatly loved and will be missed by her family and friends.
