John Gronert

John Gronert, age 69, of Urbandale, passed away in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by family on Thursday, October 14, 2021. John was born August 24, 1952, in Ames, Iowa, to Walt and Frances (Jones) Gronert. He moved to Des Moines when his father obtained a teaching job at Amos Hiatt. John graduated from Hoover High School, and attended UNI. He enlisted in the Navy, and was on a ship during the Iran Jet Crisis. John worked at various businesses throughout the years (Ryko and All States Ag Parts). John married Linda Hummel on June 14, 1986. They had a life filled with love, laughs and great adventures. Johnny loved playing softball, golfing, attending their children’s activities, sun tanning and the Iowa Hawkeyes. John is survived by his wife, Linda; his son, Ben (Tori Stifel); his daughter, Elizabeth (Jake Kersten); his father, Walt; his sisters, Sue Sinnwell (Bill) and Nancy Leiran (Steve); his sister-in-law, Kathy Sieger (Andy); his brothers-in-law, Kevin Hummel (Denise) and Scott Hummel; along with numerous nieces, nephews & cousins. John is preceded in death by his mother, Frances. John’s celebration of life will be a visitation at Caldwell Parrish (8201 Hickman Road) Wednesday, October 27 from 5-7 PM, and a funeral service at Grace Lutheran Church (5201 Urbandale Ave) on Thursday, October 28 at 11 AM. Masks are required at both locations. The family encourages attendees to wear Hawkeye gear and/or brightly colored clothes for our celebration. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
