John Jorgen Hoyem, a cherished member of his family and journalist, passed away on January 9, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa. Born on July 20, 1965, in Rochester, Minnesota, John navigated through life with an unwavering passion that was evident in both his professional accomplishments and personal pursuits.
For thirty-one years, John worked at KCCI, where he served as a distinguished producer. His remarkable talent was recognized in 2012 when he won an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for producing the Best Weekend Newscast. Furthermore, his exceptional work yielded at least two additional nominations, underscoring his dedication to excellence in journalism. KCCI is often said to have been John's second family, a nurturing environment where he thrived, investing countless hours into his work.
An ardent fan of both the Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, as well as the Chicago Bears; he had a team for each season. John’s enthusiasm for these teams drew him into the hearts of fellow supporters. His loyalty to these franchises was as steadfast as his commitment to his craft. A private individual by nature, he valued the relationships he cultivated within a close-knit circle of friends, sharing with them his passion for life and his many interests.
His bonds with family, particularly with his nieces and nephew, brought him immense joy; he affectionately referred to his nieces as "Goofball" and "Chuckle-Head," a reflection of his playful spirit and affection.
John is survived by his beloved mother, Ramona Hoyem; his siblings, Ann (Kory) Hirth of Windsor Heights, IA, and Lance Hoyem of Des Moines; nieces and nephews, Kathryn Hirth, Amanda Hirth, Wren Hoyem, and Paden Hoyem; sister-in-law, Allison Hoyem of Des Moines.
John’s life was also framed by the loss of significant figures; he is preceded in death by his father, John William Hoyem; his brother, Jeffrey Dean Hoyem. Their memories lived on in his heart, shaping the man he became.
