John ‘Jack’ Cabanis of St. Charles, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014. He was 89 years old. A gathering with family and friends to celebrate his life will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, September 28, 2014 at his home with a potluck to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family. John Brahm Cabanis was born in Chicago on November 23, 1924, the son of John and Hellene (Lenner) Cabanis. He grew up in Mason City, graduated from Mason City High School and following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II. After his military service, he went on to attend Grinnell College where he met his wife Joanne Arnold. The two were later married and to this union two daughters were born. During his working career, Jack owned and managed Quarry Supply and Capital City Belting both in Des Moines. Jack loved to fish and was an avid hunter. He was especially passionate about quail hunting and during his lifetime, owned 150 hunting dogs. Jack is survived by a daughter, Beth Cabanis of St. Charles and three grandchildren, Claire Todd, Collin Todd and Holly Womack. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a daughter, Jan Cabanis-Todd.
