John Plymesser, 76, of Waukee (Formerly of Adel), passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines.
John was born on March 8, 1948 to Dale and Cora (Roberts) Plymesser in Dexter, Iowa. He graduated from Adel High School with the class of 1966. John grew up a farm boy and learned the value of hard work. Following high school, John enlisted in the United States Army in 1968 and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970. His courageous service awarded him with a Purple Heart.
After John’s service in the Army, he married Jean Wicks on November 26, 1971 at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren. Although Jean and John never had any children, they gave a loving home to many dogs over the years, his most special being Katie, a little rat terrier. John worked doing auto body repair for quite a few years after his military service. Later in life he transitioned to working for the Dallas County Secondary Roads, eventually becoming the Superintendent of the department.
John enjoyed the great outdoors. He took many successful hunting and fishing trips, many to Canada with friends. Jean and John liked to travel and took many wonderful motorcycle trips over the years. They spent the last few years traveling to Orange Beach, AL for several weeks in the Winter.
John is survived by his wife, Jean; brother, Gale (Virginia) Plymesser; sisters, Connie Glenn, Nancy Stringer, LuAnn Plymesser, Mary Irwin, and Stella Fister; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family. John was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Cora Plymesser.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 22, 2024 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Adel Chapel with family greeting friends one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery beginning at 12:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Quilts of Valor Winterset Chapter, and/or Parkinson's Research.
