Jon R. Schneider

Jon R. Schneider, 84 passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2021. Jon was born March 11, 1937 in Keokuk IA to Irwin & Georgia Schneider. Jon a 1955 graduate from North High School in Des Moines entered the US Navy in 1956. He was injured while serving as a torpedoman on the Destroyer USS Lowry DD-770. After the Navy Jon received his BA from Drake University and Masters from Ball State University. Jon dedicated his career making life better for disabled and paralyzed individuals by educating and serving the local and national disabled and veterans' communities. Working for the City of Des Moines Jon educated and ensured implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 2001 Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Anthony J. Principi, appointed Jon as a Regional Veterans Affairs Liaison for the Dept of Veterans Affairs. Jon was the co-founder of the Iowa Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, serving as President for 33 years until his passing. Jon is survived by his loving wife Joyce of 45 years; children, Joni Norman (Steve), Jan O'Conner (Danny), Jodi Gilson Schrage (John), Steve Gilson (Claudia); cherished grandchildren, Jana Chittenden, Tim Norman, Sean O'Conner, Kailie Egr, Caitlyn Bosley, Cole Schrage, Ashley Gilson and Jacob Gilson; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Gatlin, Brock Jon, Josie, Lilly, Jackson, and Lowen Love; brothers, identical twin Don, Bob, Larry and Mike. He is preceded in death by parents and brother Ted. Visitation will be Monday April 19th at Creekside Church, 2743 82nd Place, Urbandale 10:00am to 12:00 Noon. Funeral Service immediately following at 12:00pm. Masks required. On Tuesday April 20th at 11:00am Committal Service with Military Honors will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel Iowa. Aligning with Jon's wishes and his way of taking care of others in lieu of flowers please direct memorial donations to the Iowa Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America. Donations will be utilized for the purchase of wheelchair scale(s) for the Des Moines Veterans Administration Medical Center.
