Joseph Perez Sr.

Joseph F. Perez, Sr., passed away on February 7th, 2021. He was born on March 19th, 1939, in West Des Moines, Iowa. During his career he worked at the Monarch cement plant and as a custodian for West Des Moines Public Schools. He also worked as a greeter for Dahl's Grocery Store, which became a home away from home for his famous morning coffee trips. You could also say he was our families personal chauffeur. Joseph had many interests but family and sports were at the top of his list. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved the Los Angeles Dodgers. From growing up playing baseball in the Mexican Leagues to coaching and umpiring games for his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren, he was always there. He loved watching westerns and cracking jokes, none more funny than the famous "Ohh Ohh Bird" joke that he loved to tell. He was a friend to all, extending a helping hand to whomever was in need or extending hospitality to those who needed a warm welcome. Above all, Joseph will be remembered as a man who put family first, being especially dedicated to his grand-children and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marsha; sons, Joseph Jr., Patrick, and Cory; 23 grand-children; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Anita, Frank, Raymond, Jenny, and Trino; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances; son, Scott; grand-daughter, Scalicity; grandson, Ezra; sister, Rita; brother, Buster; mother-in-law, Frances Herring; brother-in-laws, Steve Kearns and Tommy Herring; nephew, Paco; beloved Chris Stroud. He was loved by family and friends, and everywhere he went he touched the lives of many. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date. Memorials may be made to the family.
