Service: She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and 3 sisters, Ruth Herderich, Agnes Stevenson and Esther Myhra. Memorial: No services are planned and her remains will be placed next to her husband’s in the Riverside Cemetery of Fargo, North Dakota. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice 300 Hutchings Street Winterset, Iowa 50273. Joyce is survived by her 4 children, Cynthia Joyce Lane of Des Moines, Iowa; Nanci Joy Hilden of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; Paul Richard Hilden and wife, Christine of Wesley Chapel, Florida; Linda Jo Kirkland and husband, Larry of Winterset, Iowa; a sister, Irene Diederich of Fargo, North Dakota; 4 grandchildren (Mellissa, Larry Jr., Erica and Carrie) and 1 great grandchild (Darius). Joyce was born April 6, 1927 in Bowbells, North Dakota, the daughter of Osmund and Inga (Ostby) Gunvaldsen. She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1944 and then attended North Dakota State University. During her college years, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She married Richard Hilden on June 14, 1947 in Fargo and they were happily married for 56 years. During their married life they lived in several states and retired to Arizona. After the death of her husband in 2003 she moved to Winterset, Iowa to be near family. Joyce was an active member of the Lutheran Church and volunteered at nursing homes, schools and numerous charity events throughout her life. Her kindness, grace and joyful presence touched everyone she met. Her children feel blessed to have had her as a mother, role model and friend.
