Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson is in charge of arrangements for Karyl Thompson, 60 of Jefferson. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, August 19, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church after 12 Noon with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Karyl Jean Thompson was born August 7, 1951 in Jefferson, Iowa to James Keith Weaver and Esther G. Heggen Weaver and died at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa August 15, 2011. Karyl was 60 years old. Karyl graduated from Jefferson High school in 1969. She attended the University of Iowa for two years, majoring in sociology. Karyl received a certificate from a Commercial College. She was secretary for the Hawkeye Wholesaler for a year. Karyl married Charles Thompson December 16. 1972. Karyl accompanied him during his military years at Ft. Bliss and Ft. Hood, Texas. They returned to Jefferson in 1975 where Karyl farmed and managed the farms. Karyl worked as a carrier for the Bee and Herald newspapers and for the Des Moines Register. In 1988, Charlie started his ministry journey and Karyl was always there to encourage him. Their six children are veterans of the military and Pastor Charlie and Karyl's deep faith sustained them through their children's twelve combat deployments. Karyl had a deep commitment to the military and she played Taps for several years for veteran's funeral services. She saw it as her duty. Karyl was talented playing both the trumpet and the French horn. Along with Charlie, she enjoyed the Churdan Town and Country Band. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and enjoyed her membership in the Greenbrier United Methodist Women. Karyl loved politics, was a staunch Democrat, and had served the party as Chairman of the Greene County Democratic Party. Karyl's main love and supreme joy was her family. She allowed all of her children to pursue their passions and was supportive to the end. Karyl was preceded in death by her father Keith, sisters, Janet Ann and Janelle Cadden, and parents-in-law, Dr. E. Dean and Frances Thompson. Karyl is survived by her husband Pastor Charles Thompson, her mother Esther Weaver, six children; Charles Francis Thompson (Katherine) of Ho Ho Kus, NJ, Kristina Kay Thompson of Jefferson, Iowa, John Kurt Thompson (Lauren) of Fredericksburg, VA, Matthew Oren Thompson (Leah) of Ft. Lewis, WA, Michael Kieth Thompson of Ft. Riley, KS (Afghanistan) , and Philip Wesley Thompson of Ft. Bragg, NC; five grandchildren; Henry Keith and Theodore Dean Thompson, Kezia Isabelle and Thomas Marvin Anderson, and Julian Ryker Thompson; brothers-in-law Bill Cadden of WA; Joseph Thompson (Elaine) of Urbandale, Elvin D. Thompson (Patty) of Jefferson, Robert Thompson (Susan) of Urbandale, sister-in-law Judith Thompson Shank (Steve) of Wayzata, MN; aunt Margaret Heggen of Indianola; uncle Jim Andrew of Jefferson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends www.hastingsfh.com
