Kathleen 'Kate' Mae (Hagg) Carr, 85 from Van Meter, IA, died October 26, 2013 from complications due to a brain aneurysm. Kate was born October 17, 1928 to Emil and Gladys Hagg, Sr. in Adel, IA. She graduated in 1946 from Adel Community School. Last week, she and her remaining 5 class members celebrated their 67th year class reunion in Adel. On February 8th, 1947 Kate married the love of her life, Robert 'Bob' Nathaniel Carr, Sr. They were married 62 years until Bob's death in 2009. Bob and Kate were blessed with three children, Sharon, Cindy and Robert, Jr. 'Little Bobby'. After living in a few surrounding towns, Bob and Kate settled in Van Meter, IA in 1955. Kate remained in the same house until her death. Kate worked at LOOK Magazine/CDS for 21 years until her retirement in 1993. She was lucky enough to work alongside her sister Eleanor for many years. Kate hated traffic and would leave at 5:30am to be to work at 7am, although it was only a 20 mile drive into Des Moines. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and gardening with her husband, watching her grandchildren's sporting events, walking her dog, shopping for bargains, talking and watching reality television. Kate was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings and their spouses; Emil (brother) and Alice Hagg, Harold and Charlene (sister) Kellow and Eleanor Marquardt (sister); Brother-in-law, Irwin Carr; Nephews, Dwain Hagg and Butch Kellow; Grandson Jonathan Hollingsworth and dogs, Tinkerbelle and Abby. Kate is survived by her special furry kid, Hattie Mae; Children, Sharon Hollingsworth (Steve Hogan) of Pine Bluff, AR, Cindy (Bob) Blincow of West Des Moines, and Bob (Shirley) Carr of Van Meter; Grandchildren, Kathy Baumgartner of Maple Grove, MN, Heather (Jack) Phillips of Mitchellville, and Jessica Carr (Wes Reynolds) of Earlham; Great-Grandchildren, Luke and Logan Baumgartner of Maple Grove, MN, Hiliary Phillips (Billy Taylor), Bryce, Halie and Hanah Phillips all of Mitchellville; Great-Great Grandson, Carter Taylor of Mitchellville; Sister Donnabelle (Dan) Schabillion of AZ; Sister-in-Law, Patty Carr; Brother-in-laws, Gordon Marquardt of Adel, Gary (Sharon) Carr, Dewey (Michelle) Carr and Eddy (Lavina) Carr all of Des Moines; Many nephews, nieces and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 30th at McCalley's Funeral Home in Adel, IA. Friends may call after 3PM with family greeting from 5 - 7pm with a prayer service at 7pm. Funeral will be at 11am Thursday at the same place. Burial will follow at the Van Meter Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. She will be greeted, at the pearly gates, with loving arms and waging tails of many special souls who have passed before her. They will be celebrating up there so please join us for a celebration of Kate's life down here. A luncheon will follow the burial at the Van Meter Legion Hall. Family and friends are also welcomed to the house after the meal. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or Van Meter Fire Department.
