Kathryn (Katie) M. Dawes, age 98 of Adel, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2020 at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee. Kathryn was born December 31, 1921 on a farm near Bouton, Iowa to Clarence and Ethel Capp. She was the youngest of four children. She was united in marriage to Harold Dawes on November 28, 1942. Katie lived her entire life in Dallas County. She was a proud student of Washington Township School for all 12 years of her schooling and graduated in 1939 with a perfect attendance award for not missing one day of school for all 12 years. After graduating from Washington Township she took post graduate work at Adel High School. Following the completion of a course at the University of Nebraska, she taught for three years in the rural schools of Colfax township. Katie was a busy farm wife, mother and homemaker. Along with her sister she made and decorated wedding and birthday cakes for many people in Dallas County. They baked, decorated and delivered over 500 cakes often for several generations during their career. Katie loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and later the organ. After her husband’s death in 1983 she took over the operation of the farm, with the help of her son, Bill, until her death. She was very proud of the farmland that she and her husband had acquired during their farming career, including 80 acres that has remained in the Dawes family for over 100 years. She was a member of the Adel Christian Church, a devoted mother and a friend to all who knew her. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, Winnie Liston and Wilma McManus, one brother, Cliff Capp, and daughter, Betsy Dawes. She leaves to morn her passing her daughter, Jeanne (Ron) Walter, Orlando, Fla., son William Dawes, Des Moines, Iowa, 3 granddaughters, one grandson and one great granddaughter. A private family graveside service and burial will held at Panther Creek Cemetery. Due to the CDC and Governor Reynolds guidelines regarding the COVID-19 virus for social gatherings of 10 or less, there will be no visitation or funeral services scheduled.
