Kurt Wayne Van Veldhuizen was born on June 18, 1983 to Dan and Laurie (Horstman) Van Veldhuizen in Sheldon, IA. He grew up on a farm outside of Primghar, IA learning a strong work ethic from his dad and Grandpa Gene. He graduated from Hartley Melvin Sanborn High School. Kurt continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa, knowing his passion was to pursue a career where he could connect with people and make them feel better. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and went on to earn his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. Kurt opened a successful chiropractic practice in Johnston, IA. He had an unmatched talent in his field and helped bring relief to so many people over his almost 14 years of practice. He loved what he did, but more than anything, he enjoyed getting to know his patients who became family to him.
Kurt was married to Stephanie (Fox) on October 9, 2015 in Santa Rosa, CA. The two of them loved to travel and spend time with their families and friends. They often joked that he couldn’t take a trip without making new lifelong friends. Together they had two beautiful children, Elyse (4) and Jude (1). His kids were the light of his life and they admired their daddy, too. He spoiled them with lots of treats and trips to their favorite stores. Elyse would say her favorite thing to do with Daddy was to visit the baby chickens at Bomgaars and take scooter rides around the neighborhood. Jude was a daddy’s boy who loved to snuggle up with him in their favorite chair and follow him around like a little shadow.
Kurt had a passion for helping people; he was always a people pleaser. He was the go-to in the family to help with any situation, always ready to protect and support his little sisters. He went all in with all he did, and will be remembered as a selfless, caring person by all who knew and loved him. He loved to spend his spare time outdoors hunting, hiking, and fishing - especially with his dad. He may have never admitted it, but Kurt was a mama’s boy through and through, never going more than a day without talking (or arguing) with her.
Kurt passed away on July 7, 2023 at the age of 40. His family trusts and believes that he is now at peace. He is survived by his wife Stephanie of Johnston; two children, Elyse and Jude; and his parents, Dan and Laurie Van Veldhuizen (Madrid, IA). He is also survived by his siblings, Kayla (Tom) Conway (North Liberty, IA); their children, Finn, Oliver, and Lydia; Leigha (Cody) Ginger (Mt. Vernon, IA); and his grandmother, Jeane Van Veldhuizen (Sanborn, IA). He will be remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother Travis, his beloved Grandma Elsie Horstman, Grandpa Gene Van Veldhuizen, Grandpa Irv Horstman, and great friend Will Nutter.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 17, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale, IA. A Funeral Service will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
