L. Dean Smith, 73, of Apache Junction, Arizona, died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. A visitation with family will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset, where funeral services will immediately follow at the church at 5:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Lowell Dean Smith was born February 27, 1943 in Des Moines, the son of Harold “Heavy” and Lola (Bradshaw) Smith. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1961. His marriage to Karen Carson Lamp took place on January 9, 1993, at the Methodist Church in Somers, Iowa. During his working years, Dean was employed by Amend Packing Company in Des Moines and later owned and managed D and K Lawn and Garden Equipment in Lohrville. In 2001, he and Karen moved to Arizona and co-managed the Sundowner Mobile Home Park in Apache Junction. Dean was a member of the Harmony Community Baptist Church in Mesa and a member and volunteer at the Superstition Mountain Historical Society. He was also a member of the PT Cruiser Club, Moose Lodge and The Eagles. Dean loved riding his motorcycle and working on HO Train Layouts. He also enjoyed rock collecting and lapidary. Dean was a fun loving person who was always up for a good time and enjoyed anything he was involved with, whether it was jamming with friends or simply being with family, he was happy. He dearly loved his family and greatly enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Karen Smith of Arizona; his children, Teresa (Russ) Fleming, Dean (Carolyn) Smith, Mike (Christy) Smith all of Winterset, Dan (Heather) Smith of Pueblo, CO; step-children, Jeffrey (Monica) Lamp of Broken Arrow, OK; Gregory (Lisa) Lamp of Jay, OK, and Kerri Lamp-Scott (Chris Sikora) of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Sharon (Elmer) Cleaver of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Shirley Smith.
