Larry D. Nevins

Lawrence D Nevins was born December 6, 1934 in Dexter, Iowa, to John C. and Claire (Farrell) Nevins. He was a 1954 graduate of Stuart High School and later served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 with a tour of duty in Germany. Larry's marriage to Harriet Messinger took place on November 18, 1957 in Casey, Iowa. Larry began his working career with Northwestern Bell in 1955 and continued to work with the telephone company through deregulation and the many changes in the telephone industry which occurred over the years. He retired in 1994 from US West. Larry is survived by his wife, Harriet Nevins of Winterset; his children, Mike (Linda) Nevins of Winterset; Patricia (Tim) Bailey of Des Moines; three siblings, Mary Melroy of Des Moines; Martin 'Bud' Nevins of Elizabeth City, NC; Bernard (Ginger) Nevins of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Jennifer Nevins and David and Katie Bailey. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Patricia Provin and three brothers. Joseph, James and Donald Nevins. Larry was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Communication Workers of America Union and the Telephone Pioneers. Larry enjoyed being outdoors, whether camping or fishing and he loved to travel. He was also a skilled craftsman as he made many things from wood. Family was very dear to him and he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved nothing more than the time spent with family and especially his grandchildren. Visitation: Family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare, Winterset, Iowa.
