Larry Hughes, 79, of Winterset, died Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 16, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 17, at the Macksburg United Methodist Church in Macksburg with burial to follow in the Moon Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Larry Arthur Hughes, son of Ralph and Lila (Mayes) Hughes, was born February 21, 1937 in Adair County. He attended the Winterset Schools and graduated from Winterset High in 1955. Larry was united in marriage with Marilyn Chickering on October 7, 1956 at Wesley Chapel in Madison County. Marilyn died October 31, 2007. Larry married Betty (Blazer) Kirkland on November 28, 2009 at the Macksburg United Methodist Church. Larry farmed all his life, tending row crop and livestock. He was especially proud of his cattle. He also worked for Madison County Secondary Roads as a Sign Foreman for 13 years. Larry was a member of the Macksburg United Methodist Church and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed being outdoors especially if it involved fishing, hunting, camping or searching for morel mushrooms. Larry also liked to play cards, dance, garden, collect arrowheads and he was known for making the best homemade ice cream. Above all else, Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother who cherished the time he was able to spend with his family. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty Kirkland-Hughes of Winterset; children, Michelle Hughes of Winterset, Connie Fenimore of Des Moines, Phil Hughes of Winterset; step children, Cyndie Sevier of Greenfield, Sheri Lynn (Mike) Berry of Wichita, KS, Kathy Tynan of Des Moines; brother, Ronald (Carolyn) Hughes of Longmont, CO; grandchildren, Ross, Kyle, Paige (Geoffrey), Ashley, Dylan and Hunter; step grandchildren, Michael (Maureen), Krystal (Jacob), Paige, Spencer, Megan (Andrew); great-grandchildren, Bailee, Mariah, Isabel; step great-grandchildren Aislinn, Clarice, Eli, Caine, Liam; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn; brother, Keith (Mary) Hughes and two sons in infancy.
