Larry Lee Hein

Larry Lee Hein, son of Roy Harold Hein and Alice Addi Slater Hein, was born December 13, 1942 in Guthrie Center, Iowa and died June 28, 2023 at the Granger Nursing and Rehab Center, surrounded by his family. Larry was a kind, hardworking man, who was always pleasant and smiling, no matter how bad he felt. He grew up on the farm for his first four years and moved into Guthrie Center with his family and adjusted well to town life. Larry always found work to do. He worked at multiple service stations in the area and found numerous farm jobs including baling hay. Larry worked for Garst and Thomas Seed Company before his marriage to Sarah Sue Smothers. They were united in marriage on May 18, 1968, in Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home in Perry, Iowa. Larry and Sarah were blessed with daughter Heidi and sons Steve and Scott. Larry worked for Oscar Mayer from 1968 until retiring in 1988. Not one to be idle, he started working in the Food Service Department at the Woodward State Hospital. After 15 years he retired once again. Being a savvy guy, Larry learned early on to enjoy life, too. He played in Cribbage tournaments all over Iowa. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks in Perry. You could rightfully say Larry was "Bass Man". He was a founder and charter member of the Coon Valley Bass Anglers. Larry was a proud lifetime member of that group, as well as of the Iowa Bass Fishing Club, and Lizard Creek Bass Masters. And he mixed hunting and bowling. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Alice, brothers Harold Hein (Betty), and Dennis Hein, brothers-in-law: Dennis Smothers, David Smothers, Andy Stout, and Pat Stout, and sister-in-law Sandy Stout. His memory will be cherished by his wife Sarah Sue Hein of Perry, Iowa; daughter Heidi Breitsprecker (Joe) of Des Moines, Iowa; sons Steve Hein (Brooke) and Scott Hein (Dot) all of Perry, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother James Hein (Linda) of Perry, Iowa; other relatives and many friends. Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2023 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2023 also at the funeral home.
