Larry Maxwell, 76, of Winterset, died Sunday, February 26, 2017 at his daughter’s home surrounded by his family. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, family will be present at this time. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation and online condolences may be left at ochiltree.com. Larry Eugene Maxwell, son of John and Gertrude (George) Maxwell, was born on June 6, 1940 in Maxwell, Iowa. He attended schools in the area and left to help on the farm north of St. Charles after the 11th grade. Larry was united in marriage with Ardis Comer on June 26, 1958 and to this union four daughters were born. He later met Dorothy Marts who became a longtime companion for over 25 years, until her death in 2009. Larry worked at the Penn Dixie Rock Quarry for over 30 years. In his 20s, Larry enjoyed bareback riding and bull riding at countless rodeos. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Larry particularly loved hunting with his brothers and always utilized what he shot or caught. He had a passion for animals, especially his dogs and horses. He owned Lone Wolf Racing and two race horses, Shuttle Sam and Exclusive Babe. Larry liked to travel and went on over 20 cruises in his lifetime, and caught some amazing fish while deep sea fishing. Above all else, Larry cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and friends. Larry is survived by his four daughters, Terri (Jim) Wetzel of Winterset; Christine (Larry) Meyer of Silverton, OR; Julie Allen of St. Charles; Karen Rudolf of Winterset; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild on the way; sisters, Millie Ray of Branson, MO; Mary Ann Flesher of Melcher, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Freddie, Richard, and Lonnie Maxwell; sister, Helen Young; son-in-law, Terry Allen; and longtime companion, Dorothy Marts.
