Lavon Hutzell - Adel

Charlotte LaVon (Ellerman) Hutzell, 100, joined her husband in heaven on February 25, 2015. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 28, at West Des Moines Christian Church with interment to follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church. LaVon was born to George and Maude Ellerman in Dallas Center, Iowa, on October 5, 1914. After graduation from high school, she met Glenn Hutzell and they were married in 1934. Together, they built their home in Adel and raised two daughters, Shirley and Sharon. LaVon helped with the ration board during WWII and often volunteered at the Adel Public Library. She also worked at Drake University and helped her husband run their oil delivery business. In addition, she represented the Adel Welcome Wagon, where she started a newcomers' club and a bridge club. She loved playing cards, especially bridge and cribbage, and knitted over 3,000 dishcloths, all of which she gave away. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, LaVon was known for her feisty spirit and love of family. She remained sharp all her life and credited that to working crossword puzzles and the Jumble puzzle every day. On her walker, she always posted a sign with words of wisdom. The last one she chose was "Trust Yourself." She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Ehrhardt and Sharon (Dan) Campbell; grandchildren Kent (Cindy) Ehrhardt, Randy (Sue) Ehrhardt, Camille (Craig) Wolfe and Cameron (Kayla) Campbell; and great-grandchildren Ryan Ehrhardt, Mark and Luke Ehrhardt, Claire and Chelsea Wolfe, and Carson, Emmett and Liam Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dave; her sister, Evelyn; her husband, Glenn; and her son-in-law, Gerry Ehrhardt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Adel Historical Museum or the Iowa Donor Network. Online condolences may be left at this site.
