Lawrence Bailey, 81, of Altoona died Monday, June 4, 2012 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2012 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 7th with family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Lawrence was born March 30, 1931 in Winterset, Iowa; the son of Willis and Nanna (Alcorn) Bailey. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1949 and joined the USAF in November 1950. After serving a year in Korea, he started work for the United States Postal Service as a clerk in 1956, and later becoming a carrier until retiring in 1987. He married Myrtle Young on February 16, 1957 at the Dodge Center Methodist Church in Afton, Iowa and had three boys, Kenneth, Richard and Michael. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Altoona; his sons, Kenneth of West Des Moines and Michael (Barb) of Altoona; a daughter-in-law, Shelley Bailey Hargrove; four brothers, Merle (Doris) of Laurens, SC, Floyd (Louise Reynolds) of Indianola, Marvin (Lou) of Des Moines, and Paul (Thelma) of Des Moines; three sisters, Ella Reed of Indianola, Irene (Loyd) Osborn of Ottumwa, and Delores (Don) Wray of New Castle, IN; six grandchildren, Sarah (Joey) Meek, Suezanna (Nick) Martin, Troy (Chelsi) Bunch, Shelby Bunch, Hannah and Amber Bailey; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Meek and Bailey Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard.
