A. Lee Cox was born April 24, 1922 in Madison County, Iowa to Casper and Hannah (Palmer) Cox. He served in the United States Army during WWII and married Joan Janes on January 25, 1948 at the First Christian Church in Winterset. Lee is survived by his wife, Joan Cox of Winterset; three sons, Harry Cox of Winterset, Gene Cox and wife, Janelle of Winterset, and Marvin Cox also of Winterset; a daughter, Dixie Grimes of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Shane, Matthew, Molly, Monty, Gentry, Eli, April, and Marile; and eight great grandchildren, Parker, Damon, Elizabeth, Danielle, Vincent, Caelan, Lauren, and Ivy. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mabel Chew and Burla Beaman; and a brother, Alverta β€˜Al’ Cox. He worked as a welder and also did farming and construction work. He retired from Fawn Engineering after 12 years. Lee enjoyed camping and working in his woodshop. He also enjoyed music and could play the fiddle, harmonica, and guitar. Lee died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. He was 85. Burial: Union Chapel Cemetery, near St. Charles, with military honors to be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184 both of Winterset. Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, with the family present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., December 19, 2007 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare. Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday December 20, 2007 at Ochitree Funeral Service & Aftercare. Memorial: Memorials may be directed to the Kavanagh House on 56th Street, Des Moines.
