Lee was born on November 13, 1955, in Perry, Iowa, to Roger and Carolyn (Welch) Kinney, the oldest of seven children. He was deeply involved in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and participating in all sports during his adolescence. As a young boy, he worked as the town paperboy and at Hunter's Oil Station, and played a role in starting the football team in Minburn. Lee graduated from Central Dallas High School in Minburn in 1973.
On October 30, 1982, Lee married the love of his life, Angela Walker, in Minburn, Iowa. The couple made their home in the country and shared 4 lovely children: Justin, Tony, Melissa, and Megan. Lee was a dedicated family man, always encouraging his children and grandchildren in their pursuits, guiding them in sports, and cheering them on in every activity. He cherished his family above all, especially his grandchildren.
Lee was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, a lover of birdwatching, a sports enthusiast, camper, and traveler. Recently, he and Angela visited Boston to spend time with his oldest son and his family. Lee had a knack for fixing things and found joy in working outside in his yard. He had a special affection for animals, particularly dogs, with their home once being filled with as many as seven at a time. After 41 years in the country, Lee and Angela returned to his hometown of Minburn.
Lee is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Angela Kinney of Minburn; his children: Justin (Tara) Kinney and their daughters, Addison and Joslyn of Boston, Massachusetts; Tony (Stacy) Kinney and their children, Landon, Dylan, and Payton of Woodward, Iowa; Melissa Kinney and her son, Colton of Perry, Iowa; and Megan (Theron) Schroeder of Boone, Iowa. He is also survived by his mother, Carolyn Kinney of Perry; siblings: Randall (Kathleen) Kinney of Washington; Cindy Kinney of Urbandale, Iowa; Clyde (fiancée Colette) Kinney of Michigan; Lori Kinney of Winterset; Lisa Wilson of Kansas; and Janelle (Mike) Riley of Mitchellville, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Kinney, and his in-laws, Audrey and Don Walker.
Lee’s legacy of love, dedication, and support will continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
