Lela Irene Harrison Herrick, 95, of Winterset, Iowa died February 26, 2006, at the Madison County Health Care System in Winterset. Lela and James both enjoyed music & dancing. Lela was a long-time member of the Polka Club of Iowa. Lela was born February 4, 1911 in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles B. and Florence (Mapes) Harrison. She was baptized in 1926 with her two sisters Ivo and Helen at the Church of Christ in Creston. On January 16, 1926 she met James Herrick at a dance and they married on October 9, 1926. To this union, six children were born. During her working career Lela worked as a certified nurse’s assistant (CNA) at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Fontanelle as well as the Care Center South and Bethesda (Westbridge) Care Center both of Winterset. She also worked as a certified med-aid (CMA) at the Madison County Hospital, Winterset. Lela and James had their first home near Mt. Etna, where her husband farmed. They farmed in Adams and Madison Counties until 1962, when they gave up farming. After retiring from farming she and James worked with Bickford & Murrays Funeral Home in Fontanelle and later moved to Creston, where they worked with the Keating Funeral Home. In 1972, they moved to Winterset. Visitation: 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., where family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Service: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare. Memorial: Lela is survived by her six children, Neva M. (Mrs.Roscoe) Sirdoreus of Norwalk, Charles J. (Katherine Binns) of Winterset, Donald D. (Beverly Luth) of Farmington, Charlotte I. (William) Drake of Creston, Paul E. (Marilyn) of DeSoto, and David L. Herrick of Patterson; 23 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, sisters, a son-in-law and 2 grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
