Leonard Leroy Godwin, 77, of Redfield, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023 at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist in Des Moines surrounded by his family.
Leonard was born April 4, 1946 in Dexter, Iowa, the son of Forrest “Mike” and Crystelle (Emehiser) Godwin. He graduated from Dexfield High School in 1964 and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War but served in Korea near the DMZ. He was united in marriage to Linda Burchfield on April 14, 1967 in Panora, Iowa.
Leonard was a dedicated farmer, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and loyal friend. Leonard’s passions were always the simple things in life. He loved time with his family (especially his kids!) and loved his 4 legged friends, especially his dog Gator. He loved to stay home, eat a good pie and sit outside by the fire. He enjoyed many summers of camping with the family. He farmed with his dad for many years and raised livestock. He worked over 17 years for Cargill and was an active member of the Morrisburg Community Church in Stuart. He loved his church family and loved greeting them at the door each Sunday. He was a member of the Redfield American Legion Post #261 and was a Jackson Township Trustee for over 20 years. Wednesday afternoons were reserved for the “board meeting” of several friends in Redfield and Wednesday evenings were reserved for his church group Bible Study. He made many friends over the years and was loved by all that knew him.
Leonard is survived by his wife Linda; his children, Chad (Karen) Godwin of Redfield, Heather (Craig) Pote of Redfield, Holly (Matt) Sorge of Lake St. Louis, MO, and Heidi Godwin of Perry; siblings, Larry (Pam) Godwin of Redfield, Ronald (Cathy) Godwin of Panora, and Barbara Davenport of West Des Moines; 19 grandchildren, Trinity, Jorie, Bryson, and Grant; C.J.,
Casey, Parker, Abbey, Sara, Cael, and Coen; Ellie (Brendan), Alex, and Jacob; Elijah, Star, Christian (Riley), Autumn, and Isaiah; and 2 great-grandchildren, Kash and Grayson.
