Leonard attended school in Turner County, South Dakota. He farmed with his father near Parker, South Dakota. Leonard was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from January 26, 1942 until his honorable discharge October 16, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. He was a Radio Repairman, assigned to Reconnaissance Company 610 Tank Destroyer Batallion and saw duty in the European Theatre of Operations. Leonard served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded four Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. While in the service he attended TD School to be a Radio Electrician in 1943. Leonard married Grace Dorman in 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Leonard was united in marriage to Ruth "LaVon" Schwab on November 17, 1956 at the Shiloh Bible Church in Linden, Iowa. The family lived on their "Wildwood Farm" north of Perry. They were active in the First Baptist Church in Perry until 1972, when the family moved to Huxley. Leonard became a member of the Slater Baptist Church in Slater, Iowa. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed visiting about his war experiences. Leonard's family was very precious to him and he shared that love in many ways, one being to call the grandchildren very frequently.
