Lesley H. Younker, age 80, of Waukee, died Friday, August 20, 2010 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Visitation with the family will be held 10 to 12 Noon, Wednesday, August 25th, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare. A luncheon will immediately follow visitation at the VFW Hall in Winterset with military graveside services being held at 2:30 p.m. at the Moon Cemetery in Macksburg. Lesley Harold Younker was born February 4, 1930 in Indianola, Iowa to the late Harold Clinton Younker and Fern Viola Halsted. When he was young his family moved to Winterset where he attended school to the 7th grade. During that year his family moved to Macksburg where he graduated from high school in 1948. Lesley served his country in the United States Army as a Medic Corporal during the Korean War. During this time, he received several commendations including the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars; the United Nations Service Medal; and a Meritorious Unit Citation. Following the war Lesley returned to Iowa where he married Viola Mae Hartman on October 7, 1954. To this union three children were born. Together they made their home is several communities including Macksburg, Winterset, and Saylorville before moving to Waukee in 1966. Lesley worked as a janitor at Firestone in Des Moines for 32 years retiring in 1985. He was a life-member of the V.F.W. Post 8142 of Winterset. In his free-time he enjoyed tinkering around fixing cars and collection baseball and football cards. He is survived by his children Cindy Younker and Clint Younker both of Waukee; a grandson, Jason Younker (Amber) of also Waukee; two great-grandchildren, Violet and Lily; and three siblings, Viola Martin of Davenport, Melvin Younker of Knoxville, and Ruby Grimsted of Chicago, IL He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola Mae in January 2005; an infant daughter, Deborah in 1955; and siblings, Duane Younker and Alice Eaton. Memorial contributions may be directed to the VFW Post 8142 or to the family will be accepted.
