Lewis Francis Atkins

Lewis Francis Atkins, son of Nile Francis Atkins and Vera Strober Atkins, was born August 13, 1940 outside of Dallas Center, Iowa. Lewis grew up in Jamaica where he graduated high school. He enjoyed running coon dogs when he was young. Lewis and Carolyn B. Hefley were united in marriage on August 5, 1966. The couple lived in Perry and then moved to Jamaica for more than forty years. Lewis worked at Oscar Mayer for twenty years and then Progressive Foundry for twenty years before retiring. He liked gardening, fishing, and being outside in his rocking chair. Lewis died December 25, 2022 at the Perry Lutheran Home Eden Acres. He was preceded in death by his parents Nile and Vera, wife Carolyn in 2015, grandson Dakota Hoffman, brother Ray Dean Atkins, and sister Mary Ann Fenlon. Lewis is survived by his children: Ron Nelson of Des Moines, Terry Nelson of Missouri, Stephne Nelson of Winterset, John Atkins (Celestina) of Harker Heights, Texas, Pat Atkins (Jennifer) of Perry, IA and Cory Atkins (Richele) of Perry, IA; nine grandchildren: Garrett Atkins, Connor Atkins, Brianna Atkins, Kane Atkins, Adam Atkins, Ariel Atkins, Cheyenne Spence, Austin Carpenter and Ashlyn Atkins; great-grandchildren: Bennett Landals, Greysen Landals, Melody Holthaus, Dalton Spence and Kasey Spence; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry.
