Louis Heidt, 91, of Gilmore City, Iowa, passed away on March 2, 2016. Louis was born on July 18, 1924, to Edward and Frances Alger Heidt in Owen, Wisconsin. He grew up in Humboldt, Iowa, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping and many adventures with his friends. Louis enlisted in the Navy on July 24, 1943 after graduating from Humboldt High School serving until February 1, 1967, when he retired to live in Gilmore City. He was trained as a Navy Corpsman later transferred to Electronics Technician school and served as a radar specialist for the years of his service. He served on several ships and at several naval bases including a year in China at the time of the Maoist demonstrations. He was united in marriage with Lilah Flaherty on October 31, 1950. They had two children, Curt and Loretta. He loved to play cards, feed the birds and to tell tales of his childhood and service around the world. He was a member of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association He is survived by his son Curt (Sharon), 3 grandchildren, Sarah (Brandon) Mauch of Des Moines; Nicholas Heidt and fiancée Mary Koizumi of Tokyo, Japan; Laura (Sean) Honts of West Des Moines; three great-children and one brother Virgil Heidt (Betty) of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lilah, his daughter Lorretta; sister Mary Grimm and brothers Merle, and Francis. A military memorial service will be held on March 19th at 10:00 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale. On Sunday, March 20th an open house to celebrate his life will be held at the Gilmore City Senior Center from noon to 2:00 pm. Per his wishes he will be buried at sea.
