Lowell E. Dawes, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015, with family by his side. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 16th at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in rural Adel, with burial at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 15th at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel, where family will greet friends from 5:00 to 6:30 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Lowell was born on August 3, 1925. He was raised in rural Adel and attended Adel High School. He served in the Army during WWII and was a Purple Heart Recipient. On June 6, 1948, Lowell married Helen Wicks, his neighbor and childhood friend, and they raised their four children on the farm that he loved. Along with being a lifelong farmer, he was also a rural mail carrier for 25 years. Besides his faith, family, and friends, Lowell's passions included playing cards (especially cribbage) and golf, watching the Hawkeyes and Cyclones, and following the activities of his kids and grandkids. One of the family's favorite photos is of Lowell and a group of his teenage friends posing with Nile Kinnick Jr. at the park in Adel after a pickup game of football. Lowell is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen; sons, Nick (Peg) and John; daughter, Barbara Dawes Sadley; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Dawes; grandchildren, Lori (Ben) Davis, Brent (Annie) Dawes, Beau (Amie) and Colby (Laurie) Dawes, Katelyn and Christine Sadley, Sara, Anna and Maria Dawes, and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Edith; son, C. Randall, and a brother, Harold. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Lowell's memory to the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in Adel or the ADM Alumni Association.
