Lowell Simmons, 86, of Peru, passed away, Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Community Care Center in Stuart. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family. Lowell was born October 5, 1924 in Osceola, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Mabel (Frank) Simmons. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was commissioned to serve on the Battleship New Jersey. His marriage to Phyllis Leach took place after his discharge from the Navy in 1945 and to this union two sons, Larry and Bruce were born. Lowell worked construction for most of his working years and also farmed during this time. He was a member of the VFW and the Carpenters Union Local 106. He is survived by his two sons, Larry (Linda) Simmons of St. Charles; Bruce (Kathy) Simmons of Truro; three grandchildren, Christopher (Meagan) Simmons of New York City; Lee (Lindsay) Simmons of West Des Moines and Cantrelle (Jacob) Collazo of Keller, TX, great grandchildren, Sydney and Sasha Collazo, Penelope Simmons and a soon to be born second child to Lee and Lindsay Simmons. He is also survived by his long-time companion Darlene Tague of Guthrie Center as well as her loving family. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents.
