Lucile (Ogburn) Martens

April 13, 1917 — August 22, 2008

Lucile Hazel Ogburn was born April 13, 1917 in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of William Oscar and Cassie (Hess) Ogburn. She graduated from Winterset Schools and taught for several years in country schools in Madison County. Lucile’s marriage to Irvin Martens took place on June 20, 1943 in West Des Moines. Following their marriage they lived in Baltimore, MD while Irvin was serving in the United States Army. They returned to Iowa when Irvin was through with his military service and settled on their farm north of Winterset. Lucile is survived by a brother-in-law, Frank Foland; a sister-in-law, Gladys Martens; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sister, Maxine Foland. She was active in Tri-L Club, Tuesday Club and the Lakeview Country Club activities. She served on the boards of the Madison County Memorial Hospital as well as the Winterset Library. She also helped start the John Wayne Memorials through the Tri-L Club. She and Irvin were also part of the original Covered Bridge Festival Committee and she was active in the Madison County Republicans. Lucile enjoyed traveling and playing golf and actively played until just three years ago. She owned and ran the H& R Block office for many years in Winterset. Lucile and Irvin spent winters in Florida and in 1997 they purchased a home in Lakeland and moved there. They were members of the Faith Lutheran Church in Lakeland. Due to ill health, Lucile returned to Winterset in July of 2008.
