She grew up and attended school in Winterset graduating in the Class of 1939. Mae married Marcy C. Baker on November 21, 1940 in Jefferson, Iowa and four children were born to this union. During her working years, Mae was mainly a homemaker staying at home raising her family; however, once the kids were grown, she worked at McGinley’s Super Value in Winterset. She also worked at the Aldo Café in Winterset. Mae was a member of the Crown Rebekka Lodge for many years as well as the Iris Club. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and later attended services with her daughter, Debbie at the First Baptist Church, later known as the New Bridge Church in Winterset. Mae loved to travel the United States and especially loved the mountains. She was a voracious reader and belonged to several book clubs throughout the years. She especially enjoyed movies and books about the old south and ‘Gone With The Wind’ was her all-time favorite. She found relaxation in word-find puzzles and when she had a patio she enjoyed rocking and relaxing, surrounded by her flowers and hanging plants. Mae loved to shop, especially around Christmas and she also loved to bake during the holiday season. She enjoyed going out to eat; especially for breakfast and she LOVED cinnamon rolls. She had one for breakfast with her coffee every morning. She also loved jewelry; especially earrings and rings which she had a ton of and practically wore one on every finger. She was NEVER without her earrings and lipstick. Above all else, Mae enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly. Mae died Thursday, February 18, 2016 in Winterset.
