Marcellus Sprenger

He was 88 years old and a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather great grandfather and friend. Marc was born January 11, 1933 in Jefferson City, MO. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia and Drake University, Des Moines. He held a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Psychology. In 1957, he met the love of his life Virginia (Ginny) Barnds in Columbia, MO; they married on August 24th, 1960. They enjoyed family camping, visiting relatives, gardening but most of all raising their three children. Marc worked at Iowa Workforce Development for 22 years in Des Moines, Ottumwa, Fairfield and Oskaloosa, IA. During his time there, he served was President of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security (IAPES). He was a lifelong Missouri Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved playing fast-pitch softball, pitching into his 50’s. He also served as President of Ottumwa’s American Little League. He was an avid reader and loved attending his kids and grandkids activities. Some of his favorite sayings were, “don’t worry about things that you can’t control,” and “don’t burn any bridges,” and “remember that every day you’re doing your best.” He was preceded in death by his father Anthony and mother Teresa Puetz Sprenger, his brother James and sister-in-law June Mason Sprenger, and brother-in-law Melvin Wolfe. He is survived by his wife Ginny and son Joe, daughter Anita (Jake) and son Darren (Angie), six grandchildren, Amanda, Andrea, Brandon, Alivia, Colton and Easton and 5 great-grandchildren, Marcella, Marek, Mila, Gibson and baby boy Sprenger. He is also survived by his sister Shirley Wolfe and her 3 sons Jeff, Brad and Lindell as well as a niece, Kimberly Sprenger and nephew, Dave (Julie) Sprenger and their daughter, Briony and her girls Esme and Lacey. A private memorial service is planned for family and close friends at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA. A livestream of the service will also be available at www.caldwellparrish.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in his name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Organization (www.alz.org).
