Marcia Ann Hyde

May 13, 1931 — January 10, 2016

Marcia Ann Burklund, oldest child of Oliver and Lola Burklund, was born on May 13, 1931 in Gage County, Nebraska, and departed this world on January 10th, 2016 in Des Moines, Iowa. Her time with us was precious, and she leaves behind a loving circle of family and friends, each of whose lives are better because she was part of it. Marcias early life was spent in Clay County, Nebraska where she and her 6 brothers and sisters were nurtured by loving parents, and grew together to be the core of tight-knit extended family. Her early life laid the foundation for a lifetime of faith, a passion for education, and a love of the written word. Marcia graduated from Clay Center High School and went on to the University of Nebraska earning a degree in English with Minors in Library Sciences and Business. She taught high school for several years after earning her degree. It was in Lincoln that her life-long love affair with husband Keith Hyde began, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage prior to his death in 2012. Marcias many talents were evident as she created her own family, and made a home for them in many residences over the years in Nebraska, Colorado and Iowa. Central to her focus were her four children, and she actively engaged in their lives, leading Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls, volunteering at school, teaching Sunday school, and guiding them to a well-rounded life experience that included academics, Christian education, sports and music. Above all, she made sure each child knew they were her favorite! Prior to retiring, Marcia worked part time for many years at B. Dalton Booksellers, which gave her a convenient excuse to read often 2 or 3 books simultaneously. Willa Cathers works were near to her heart, but her interests were wide ranging and no well written book was ignored; the bookshelves of her home were overflowing. In retirement, Marcia travelled with Keith and volunteered with NOMADS, working on service projects throughout the Southern and Western United States. She was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, American Association of University Women, and the Grace Quilters. Marcia was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister Sally, and a brother Richard. She is survived by children Douglas (Jeanette) Hyde of Richardson, Texas, Linda (Greg) Hansen of Altoona, Neil (Alicia) Hyde of Urbandale, and Sara (Jim) Martin of Johnston, and seven grandchildren, Mattia Hansen, Kelsey Hyde, Andrew (Lyndsey) Martin, Spencer Hyde, Katherine Hyde, Megan Martin and William Hyde. Also surviving Marcia are brothers Eugene (Angie), Fred (Elsie), and John (Norma) Burklund, sister Glenda Ritterbush, sister-in-law Marilyn Burklund, and many nieces and nephews. Marcia donated her body to Des Moines University for the purposes of medical study. A visitation will be held Saturday January 16th at 1PM with a memorial service immediately following at 2:30, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove, in Des Moines. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Grace United Methodist Church in support of their ministry and missions.
