Martha is survived by her son, Paul Hammans and his wife, LaVonne of Lorimor; her 2 grandchildren, Joshua Hammans and his wife, Kimberly of Virginia Beach, VA; Alyce Hammans of Iowa City; her great grandson, Hunter Hammans; a sister, Betty Canfield of Hudson, OH; a niece, Marcia Kelly and husband, Tom of Hudson, OH and 2 nephews, Irving Canfield of Woodburn, OR and Ward Canfield and his wife, Jinhee of Mount Prospect, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter, Nancy Hammans. Martha Lilly Fosher was born April 6, 1922 in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of Hubert C. and Alma (Johnston) Fosher. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1940 and went on to attend Coe College in Cedar Rapids where she received a business certificate. Her marriage to Jack Hammans took place on August 3, 1946 and to this union a daughter and son were born. Jack preceded her in death on April 18, 1995. Aside from her many years as a dedicated homemaker and farm wife, Martha, was a talented musician, teaching piano for 30 years from her home. She also worked for the Westbridge Care Center in Winterset for 13 years, where she was known for her wonderful baking. Martha was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Winterset where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Sunshine Club which was a group of neighborhood ladies in Monroe Township. Martha was a very hard worker but when she took time for herself she loved to read and it can be said she was a voracious reader. Martha died peacefully in her sleep, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at her son’s home near Lorimor. She was 87.
