Martin Magill, 82, of Perry, passed away at the MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, surrounded by family.
Marty was born on April 16,1942, to Edwin and Rita “Maxine” (Pieper) Magill in Vail, Iowa.He was raised on a farm near Vail where he learned the value of a hard day’s work. When chores were done, he made time to show cattle with his 4-H club at the Crawford County fair and participated in high school football, track and band. He was a graduate of AR-WE-VA High School in West Side, Iowa. In 1962, he moved to Perry to start employment at Oscar Mayer (later Tyson) where he worked for the next 42 years. He met the love of his life, LaJune Brus from Denison, and on April 21,1963, they were married in Schleswig, Iowa, at the United Church of Christ. Marty and LaJune were blessed with three children: Shaun, Melissa, and Shelly.
After kids came along, his summers revolved around baseball and softball where he assisted with coaching and administration of the Little League program. He was president of the Perry High School Booster Club and was his kids’ biggest supporter, never missing their sporting events or activities.
Once he became a grandpa, his love for sports expanded. He traveled the state to cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events and never missed his only granddaughter’s dance recitals.Weekends he could often be found at a dirt track cheering on his son/grandsons in their truck pulling adventures, and Sunday afternoons were often spent watching Nascar races with LaJune.
Marty’s mornings always started with early morning coffee with his buddies. For the past decade, he looked forward to lunch too when his grandsons stopped by for some of LaJune’s great cooking.
Marty was a devoted Christian. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Perry where he served as an elder and trustee. He loved God and his family with his whole heart and was a great role model.
Marty is survived by his wife, LaJune; children, Shaun (Kris) Magill, Melissa (Todd) Coy, and Shelly (Mike) Eggers; grandchildren, Josh (Brynn) Magill, Nate (Sam) Magill, Ben Coy, Sara (Jack) Manning, Casey (Alaina) Coy, Nick (Emmarie) Eggers, Colton Coy, Luke (Katelyn) Eggers, and Alec Eggers; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Gary (Rhonda) Magill, Gene Magill, and Tim (Kay) Magill; and many nieces.
