Marvin Herman Berns, 89, of Waukee, passed away October 8, 2022 at Independence Village in Waukee, IA. A visitation where family will greet friends will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel, beginning at 9:00A.M. A funeral service will begin at 10:00am at the church. Burial will take place following a time of fellowship after, the service at the Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden, IA beginning at 1:30P.M.. Marvin Herman Berns, the son of Harold Andrew Berns and Lillian Dorothy Louise (Wentzel) was born October 4, 1933 in Carroll, IA. He was baptized into the Christian Faith at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden, IA on October 22, 1933 and was confirmed in that faith on March 30, 1947. He attended Carroll County rural schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Glidden High School in 1951. Marvin liked music and sang in quartets and choirs. He also played his accordion for entertainment at various dances and family gatherings.
After graduation from high school he farmed with his father. On September 19, 1954 he was united in marriage with Shirley Schick at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Coon Rapids, IA. They were blessed with three children, Donald, Renae and Jana. Marvin and Shirley lived on a farm southwest of Lohrville, IA for 54 years. Upon retirement in 2009 they moved to Urbandale, IA. Marvin was active on many boards including; the Calhoun County FHMA Board, Lake City-Yetter Farm Cooperative Board, Director of the Glidden REC; Elder at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden and Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City and other church committees. Marvin and Shirley traveled to numerous states including Hawaii and Alaska and they enjoyed wintering in Arizona. They truly enjoyed their grandchildren, especially on the visits to the farm.
His legacy will continue on in the hearts of his loving wife, Shirley; son Donald (Pam) Berns and their daughter Chelsea (Steven) Binz and great grandson Oliver Binz; daughter Renae (Brett) Johnson and their children Kyle (Kari) Johnson and Courtney Johnson (fiancé Justin); daughter Jana (Charles) Robertson and their children Jack and Christina. Also surviving is his brother-in-law Raymond Diekmann as well as many other extended family and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; Harold and Lillian; sister Dorothy Diekman; brother Dale Berns; sister-in-law Bonnie Berns; nephews Tommy Berns, Brian Berns, Bruce Diekmann and Brian Schick. Also his father-in-law and mother–in-law Henry and Iva Schick as well as brother-in-law Donald Schick.
